Atlas Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I install Atlas?
First, locate your World of Warcraft addons folder. This is usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\ if your computer is running Windows. Next, unzip the file you just downloaded into the AddOns folder and restart the game. Windows XP has built-in zip support. You can also use WinZip, PowerArchiver, or 7-Zip.

Why doesn't Atlas appear in my list of Addons? (This is the most-asked question, by far)
Some zip software creates a new folder for the contents of a zip file to be extracted into. This will prevent the game from recognizing addons. For example, the path to Atlas.toc may look like C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas_vX.X.X\Atlas\ -- in this case, the Atlas_vX.X.X folder was created automatically by the zip software and is causing the problem. Move the Atlas folder into the AddOns folder, and everything will work.

Why do I see green squares instead of maps?
This means that the game can't locate the image files Atlas needs to function. This is often caused by zip software that doesn't preserve directory structures. Use one of the recommended zip programs listed above. All blp files must be located within a folder called Images that's found inside the Atlas folder.
You should see the folder structure like below:

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas\Core\
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas\Docs\
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas\Images\
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas\Libs\
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas\Locale\
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas\Atlas.toc
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Atlas\Bindings.xml
The download failed
Please make sure where and how you download Atlas addon. If you directly download the addon from the web sites we post, not through any application like addon managing application, then please try the download again. Sometimes the download fails may due to the unstable network condition between your computer and the addon hosting site, so the problem could be your home network, your ISP, or sometimes the hosting site. Try another hosting site.

If you are downloading the addon through some WoW addon managing client, the problem sometimes is due to the client can't get response from the server. The problem is even worse when WoW has a major release and all old addons will be treated as out-dated.

Please be aware that Atlas addon size is huge (around 18MB) comparing to other addons. That is because we include many maps. So sometimes the download may fail due to network problem or due to hosting server is too busy. Please be patient and try again.

How can I get rid of the error Atlas generates after the game loads?
First and foremost, restart the game. If that doesn't get rid of the error, clear all of the Atlas saved variable data and restart the game again. Saved variables are stored in the World of Warcraft/WTF folder.
Sometimes the error was generated by other addon, you may also try disable all addons and only enable Atlas, to verify if the error actually is caused by Atlas.
If the error still doesn't go away and if you are sure the problem is caused by Atlas, post here.

Why doesn't Atlas show my position inside an instance?
Some time ago, Blizzard removed the ability to get coordinates inside an instance, so unfortunately this feature is impossible.

Can I use your maps?
Yes, if you give credit and a link to -- also, don't hotlink; please host the images yourself.
Also, you should keep the map signature in each of the map.

If you have a question that isn't answered here, you can post your question in our forum.

Just a quick note:

If you're getting errors with any new version of Atlas, simply restart the client. Hot-swapping doesn't work.

If the errors persist, remove your Atlas saved variables data.

If the errors still persist, start a new topic here on the forum, or post in CurseForge ticket system at if you have a CurseForge account.

So? You got a error! But is it an Atlas error? Let's find out!

1. Go to the character select screen and disable all addons except Atlas.

2. Log in and play. If you don't get the error, then it isn't a problem with Atlas!

3. If you do get an error, then go check for a updated version. If the new version didn't fix your problem, see step 4.

4. Come here to the Atlas forum! Then look around to see if anyone posted it already.

5. If not, make a detailed topic describing what you were doing at the time and the exact text of the error.

6. Wait for new version.

There you go, a noob's guide to errors!
