You mean, with some kind of server communication channel thing? Is there a library (ace?) for that?

I did think about it at one stage, but it was more trouble than it was worth. More events hooked -> more that can go wrong. In any case, addon messages are restricted to within your guild, raid or party. You can do whispers, but that is useless for what you describe.

Whispers for version checks are useless. What are you going to do? /who the entire server and send an addon query to see if there is a new version? No. The best you can do is query everyone in your guild at login time and report back if anyone has a newer version, which is a bit of a waste of effort really.

hmm...yeah but useless...if someone uses a new version in the guild he'll tell the others anyway. Possible to create kind of button to look for a new version on the realm ? or an optional-channel ?

Perhaps it helps when you look how this is solved in GEM.

X-Perl unit frames used to drop a message into chatframe1 when a new version was out. I'm not sure if it did that via the channel or via some communication with something or what.

Just another place to check :).

It would have done a guild check, as there is no way for UI communication to random people except through channels, which is somewhat frowned upon since the creation of the SendAddonMessage() function.
