Atlas license question

Post by broly » Sat Feb 13, 2010 2:39 pm

Hi all,
I was wondering if any of you could shed some light about how to interpret the Atlas GPL 2 license and the inclusion of the maps in other proprietary software.
I wrote Dan an email four days ago but did not get any reply yet, so I decided to post here as well.
I have developed an iPhone boss guide for World of Warcraft, and in the next release I wanted to include instance maps too.
I cannot make my software GPL because I am using external frameworks for which I don't possess the source code.
Since I am only linking to the maps, which I assume are distributed under the GPL v2 too, would it be legally ok to just redistribute an archive of those maps (which I might modify to make them suitable to my app) under the same GPL license, making it available for download from the app website?
From my understanding, this is what most companies do when using GPL software together with closed source applications.
Thanks in advance for your help!

This is my understanding also, you separate the GPL part into a separate package that the 'closed source' stuff can access.

Thanks for the info! :)
Dan: don't worry about providing the maps, i can easily extract them from the atlas texture files.
I will include a special "thank you" to the atlas community in my app credits page :)
Thanks again!

I wanted to say a big thanks to Dan and the Atlas community, I have integrated the maps into my app.
For those of you that have an iPhone and want to give it a try, here are 10 redeem codes to get the app for free from the app store:
(if you do use a code, pls write the code you used in this thread so people won't try to use it twice)

YFRHX39Y64FE
X9NRTAJTMHT3
7KL9RTLW37XR
HKF3LFPFMHHE
WFFLY97EELHP
JPRFJT97MPXN
J6RWFXELF9H3
PTLTTRA63NAM
EERLHKFR9HXW
A796TFK9P7FR

The app is called WoWTactics:

I have released the edited maps under GPL v2 as requested from the Atlas license and put the download available on the app website:

Thanks again!

looks nais, gonna try it.

Didn't find a way to enter any code in my iTunes, but for spending a few hours into the app you probably deserve 2$ anyway^^

I used code YFRHX39Y64FE on my iPod.
This app is amazing, nice to be able to look up info on the dungeons and bosses while not at my computer.

Hegarol, unfortunately iTunes redeem codes are only working in the US store ... nothing I can do about that, sorry :(
Apple makes great products but can really suck in some of their policies sometimes ... :(
